movie

every now and again a friend of mine gets dvds pre-released to her house. we watched Sweeney Todd yesterday and it was surprisingly shocking. her father tells me that friends of his are actually getting nightmares (and probably not those people you've already characterized in your mind, more like the real ones, like you and me); but despite an impressive showing, thats not the movie I wanted to talk about...

"There Will Be Blood"
the music is like something from the shining, and the imagery reminds me of Days of Heaven, or The Assassination of Jessie James By The Coward Robert Ford. there are a lot of uncomfortable moments created by unsettling and unpredictable characters. as you might have figured out by the title, this movie isn't about oil, it is about every dirty instinct that spawns from the kind of wealth, competition and tragedy that oil creates. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, one of the coldest characters I've seen. sometimes it seems like the plot is just a lot of random events thrown together over about two and a half hours. but it's worth it. there are a lot of running themes to deal with. also, these days it seems like movies are becoming more Jim Jarmusch/impressionist. mostly just to give you a feeling and let you sleep with it. the link on the picture is a trailer that i think represents the movie well.

anyway, its 3:20 in the financial district on christmas day and all the jack-hammers and massive trucks have gone to sleep. its more quiet than the suburbs.

love the questions

we're in a period of great uncertainty at the moment. you know, most people, you're on 10 on your guitar, you're on 10 on your amplifier; where can you go from there? Nowhere, exactly, you've got nowhere to go...so when we need that extra push, over the cliff....

we go to 11.

Indeep, indeed.

I'm so late...VICE reviews The Huxtables

"This CD came attached to the back page of a pink-and-yellow construction-paper zine filled with really shitty drawings of whale-men and raccoons, which is enough to convince me that my decision to listen to it instead of, say, hurling it against the nearest wall and cleaning up the mess weeks later was an act of intervention on the part of a particularly benevolent, good-tune-appreciating god. This is exactly what I always hoped all those Paper Rad/Load bands would sound like instead of just bad noise-jazz—casual little guitar melodies with broken-y keyboards and extended Cosby Show samples."

LEROY GUMPTION

You can check out the original here.
And everyone knows VICE. Ok, I gotta get back to watching the VMAs. *Justice vs. Kanye or should I say *Justice vs. Daft Punk

Ok, well here's the cover of the VICE. I just ordered it off ebay.

OH YEAH! and the tour just ended, so here's a picture (cy has all the others on his facebook)...

Columbia Records Internships Announced!

Here's the info (you can always say we're cool...you know, I'm hot there...yeah thats right bitches. I said that shit.):

Columbia Records is looking for hardworking, eager students willing to dedicate time in the A&R Department. Experience is not required, but it is suggested. Candidates must possess passion and a vast knowledge of music.

We are looking for taste makers to provide Columbia Records with new acts as well as assist the A&R department in various tasks. This is not a typical internship – there will be minimal Xeroxing and coffee fetching – and a great deal of self-motivation will be necessary.

Candidates must be able to dedicate time to concerts and other industry related events outside of the office, and be eager to experience the inner-workings of a major record label.

This internship is a great introduction to the industry. We are looking for quick learners with their fingers on the pulse of the current music climate.

You must be a self-starter who is not afraid to ask questions and initiate conversations. We only want people who are ambitious, excited and eager to learn. We need students who are responsible, reliable, ambitious, organized, and able to multi-task.

While by no means required, the following skills are a plus. Please let us know if you have knowledge of any of the following:
• HTML
• Graphic Design
• Digital Video Editing
• Music production

This is an unpaid internship and you must be able to receive college credit.
Only serious applicants need apply.

If interested please send a cover letter and resume to: columbiarecords.arintern@sonybmg.com

I bumped into Jay-Z at the office today...

Yeah, he was chillin with my boss drinkin white wine in her office before the club got goin. He left and we kinda squeezed by eachother in the hallway...he's kinda scrony. I think could take him. I'm pretty sure that's all it takes to retain someone else's fortune.

"I'm five foot five - six inches or more, but I stand like I'm six-four."

The real reason I wrote this post??? To remind Skidmore kids and friends of Skid kiddies (whats goin on fellas) that the Huxtables and Snakes are playing at Excelsior (in Saratoga Springs for you non-Skidmore people) August 11th. Also, to remind everyone else that the Spirit Marines are playing this Friday (the 27th) at a house party called "Death by Audio" (which should be sweaty and unbridled) at 49 S. 2nd St. in Brooklyn from 8:00pm - 11:00pm. ENJOY! And I'll see you guys who aren't in NYC back at Skidmore (because those are basically the only two places where people have chosen to spend their summer).

...speaking of people spending their funny time in funny places...

Two Huxtables Reviews: "A Touch of Wonder is perfect proof."

Here are a couple great reviews of the Huxtables book...(click the links for the articles in toto)

1. Exclaim! - Canada's Music Authority:
"With drawings of monsters and mutated humans, and songs with weird rings and tones, the Huxtables have created a 42-page wide, 13-song long interpretation of madness, and it’s grand."

2. Tiny Mix Tapes:
"As hard as The Huxtables try to confuse themselves and anyone within earshot, many of the tunes make a lot of sense in an intangible way."

MGMT finishes new album

This is a funny post on some music industry info site. They finished recording with Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Mogwai, Sparklehorse, The Flaming Lips, Whirlwind Heat). Here's words from the band off the site...

"We’re developing a slick marketing campaign that will paste our feces all over Myspace and the Facebook and get us real hyped with bloggers and “taste makers” so that we can be compared to Radiohead and then disappear within human gestation period time and no one will even recognize us on the streets anymore and we’ll die lonely and in abject despair."

Two Newly Recorded Spirit Marines Tracks

Spirit Marines got a couple tracks recorded on the myspace. Its rough, but I'm starting to realize thats how I like it. According to Jake, "it is an international collective effort...it was done in one session, with nudity." He also said the whole thing was blindfolded...Blindfolded? Nudity? Rough? Making things more exciting by adding vocals? Ok, I gotta go take a five minute break...ok, three minute...
...ok, I don't need to say it sounds like a great first cut, you got the link...

I guess this is just a Culture Blog now...

Here's my best translation of this Portuguese blog, Mespacinho, about Snakes Say Hisss!

"My.....Snakes Say Hisss Snakes Say Hisss I adored. That is you perfect sound track will be who confuses you the Hustler with Wrestling. LOLLLLL, oh well. "Famous class", or disc, is of the past, but wants anus there you know, Íll be loving you...; ) And you speech is that you people understands."

This is also a funny Live Journal about Boogie Boarder.

Oh yeah tour coming up in August...uh I'll let you know...

P.S.
here's something cool I found from this japanese blog (thats right, I export my reasearch on good american shit) with a wierd name - You Are Not Concerned (Don't Trust "Everybody"). Nothing hotter than finding/diggin on yourself on the dancefloor.

Huxtables:Reviews all over the Bloggos-globe

Here are a couple new Huxtables reviews that popped up in the last couple days.
1. This one's from a blog called The Daily Cross Hatch from February 20th. Its an interview with Cyrus and Perry. I'm scared to give a snippit, 'cause they have a badd-ass © on their website. Anyway, its a good one.
2. Here's a single review of "Crystal Cubes from a blog called Paper Thin Walls that was published March 7th. Its a great blog 'cause its so concise and just straight articulate or whatever. I don't get into that here. Anyway, here's a snippit...

That's that. Here's my ©'s...

anthem Magazine:Famous Class

The latest issue (#26) of anthem Magazine, a thickish magazine featuring "different facets of progressive culture with a focus both on domestic and international content," features an interview with Cyrus and Jamie. Here's the online blurb...

anthem puts out 6 issues a year. You can avoid the whole subscription (unless you don't want to - people seem to love it) and get single issues at places like Atomic Books.

"Try thinking of us as the bigger picture." - anthem

WBAR Columbia:Boogie Boarder #6 album in 2006

Columbia University's undergrad magazine, "The Blue and White," has reported lists of top albums and singles from Music Directors etc. of Barnard Radio - WBAR 87.9fm. Most of the lists are from DJs, but this one's from Chas Carey - a WBAR Music Director (College Rock) and Managing Editor for "The Fed," Columbia's Subversive Newspaper.

Carey seems overly concerned about his music in only the most refreshing way. Great to have support from the Managing Editor of a subversive magazine which uses this picture to extend its hand to the community:

Snakes featured in latest issue of Tokion Magazine

The review is good too. Its a small snippet towards the back so if I preview it, I'll be rewriting half of it, but you should check it out fo sho. They should also be featured in the next issue of Vice Magazine...that makes me nervous, but only because Vice hates everything.
